    TMobile Shadow -Lief [mobile]

After sticking with my Treo 650 for about three years, I finally upgraded to a Windows Mobile phone earlier this month. You know what I wanted the most from an updated phone? I wanted a phone with no antenna nub. Ah, the simple things... All I wanted was a piece of HW which wouldn't jam into my thigh... And by George, I have it!

Ok, so that wasn't all. I wanted something relatively compact which could sync up to my work calendar and contacts and hopefully have wifi. Shadow has all this and pretty good look to it. I know I'm giving up some processing speed compared to other phones, but I love how compact it is.

Final thing: I held my breath about whether the keyboard would actually be useful (it's one step above texting on a number pad)... It really is. As I type this up on my phone, I feel I'm getting more proficient everyday.

    Getting back to normal –Lief

Spent the week in meetings, meetings and more meetings concerning the cuts and upcoming projects. Things are sort of getting back on track at the office with all the scheduling and specs which need to be updated… though it’s still a little odd to walk by an empty office which once had a fellow colleague. Management has been sharing how the cut positions will be reallocated to more strategic business plans – well, we’ll see I guess. Just hope that ‘my peeps’ will be able to find something to meet their career needs soon, whether it’s in or out of the company.

Listening to the news two nights ago though, my region got hit with more somber news on the job front. Boeing (4500) and Starbucks (up to 6700) just announced job cuts after they posted losses for their quarterly earnings report. Obviously, these cuts are not bound to just where I am, but still it’s quite a blow to the area since those two companies are synonymous with the Pac NW.

    1400 today -Lief

*Sigh* It’s been quite a week; quite a day. I woke up to Lisa asking me about the numbers being reported on the news about 5000 employees being let go, 1400 today. I honestly had no idea of what that meant. There was no tangible feeling of what this meant to me or the sudden loss of camaraderie missing from the colleagues I work with. Really. I wondered what the day would hold (change a diaper, get toddlers dressed, get Monkeyboy on the bus…) as this was THE day when the financials would be reported and perhaps shed some light on the rumors permeating through the office.

Well, things seemed okay until noon. I spent a part of the morning reading comments on the miniMicrosoft blog (note to self: NOT healthy comments there, best leave that one alone). It all turned into a bad Twilight Zone episode when Jason passed by with the white 8 1/2 x 11 envelope… from there it went from bad to worse. I don’t think I’m ever going to trust those white envelopes anymore. We lost some good folks today:

    • Victoria
    • Jason
    • Misty
    • Brick
    • Susan
    • Steven
    • Tiffany
    • Sajid
    • Tim
    • Sam
    • Justin
    • Mark
    • Jeff
    • Jon
    • Aaron
    • Wynn
    • Ginny
    • TJ
    • Matt

Now I have a tangible feeling of loss, and I’m restless. I feel like I need to do something - especially after seeing Obama sworn in and the sense of community he brings to the floor. Watching the inaugural ceremony really meant a great deal to a lot of people, and I think it is so cool to see the photos from my friends who were in DC, took photos and posted them up on FB. I agree with everyone who believes that the US is transitioning into a new era, and it can be embraced with everyone working toward a common goal for the good of all or it can be everyone for themselves with chaos and unhappiness… I hope we can achieve the first. Everyone I spoke to today who got notice, I offered to keep an ear open for them, and I mean it. Gah! Today was rough.

This week was good though too. We have a new leader in the US. Monkeyboy hugged me tight tonight going to bed and gave me the happiest grin ever. “Daddy is here,” he said when I came in the bedroom. As I sat beside Kitten stroking her hair, Monkeyboy came down his slide, snuggled next to me on the floor and hugged my arm. He didn’t want to let go, and it meant so much after today. It’s like God was giving some silver-lining to the ordeals of the day.

Prayers out to all of you transitioning into something new.

    Palm Pre looks sweet -Lief

So my friend Tom sent me the following link yesterday: http://realdanlyons.com/blog/2009/01/08/palm-pre-rocks-ces/

Just as Lis and I are leaving our Palm Treo 650s by the wayside and moving to TMobile, the elusive major Palm update is announced. Do you know how long I've been waiting for Palm to put wi-fi in their phones? And, of course, Sprint picks it up... doh! Dunno if I should jump for joy or cry. Anyway, the Pre looks pretty slick and has some really nice features in it - the one I'm particuarly intrigued by is the software's ability to take calendar and contact info from multiple sources and put it nicely together in one interface for you. Now that is NICE!
